What Are Implant Dentures?
While traditional dentures use adhesive or natural suction to hold their place on the gums, implant dentures are secured with small, screwlike titanium pieces surgically placed in the jaw. This keeps your new teeth anchored in position at all times. Implant dentures come in removable or permanent varieties. After a consultation to evaluate your oral health and ask you about your needs and preferences, we can determine which type would suit you best.
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
Fixed implant dentures are designed to only be removed from your dental implants during your dental appointments. A big selling point for fixed implant dentures is that they only require the same brushing and flossing regimen as natural teeth. This type usually requires more implants (usually four to eight) than the removable variety.
Removable Implant Dentures
Removable implant dentures can be taken out of your mouth at any time, allowing you to give the underlying oral structures a thorough cleaning. This type is better for patients with lower jawbone densities because they usually only require about two to five implants to be placed.
The Implant Denture Process
The process of getting implant dentures begins with a consultation, during which we will examine your mouth and develop a treatment plan according to your needs and preferences. Many patients will require treatments like bone grafting or periodontal treatments to get their mouths in shape to receive dental implants.
Once your mouth is ready, we’ll surgically place dental implants at the points in your jaw that can provide maximum stability. After the implants have fused to the jawbone, a process that can take up to six months, we’ll attach abutment pieces and anchor your dentures to them, giving you a beautiful and sturdy new smile.
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?
If you are missing a whole arch of teeth, you may be able to receive implant dentures if you meet the following criteria:
- Your mouth is free of gum disease and other infections.
- Your jaw is sufficiently dense to host dental implants.
- You will practice excellent oral hygiene after your implants are placed.
Even if you can’t get dental implants immediately, you may still be able to become eligible for them after receiving appropriate preliminary treatments.
Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants
Implant dentures can deliver significant benefits for your oral health and quality of life, including:
- Lifelike restorations that feel and look like natural teeth.
- Allowing you to eat all types of food by restoring your chewing power.
- Preventing or reversing bone loss in the jaw.
- With the right care and maintenance, implant dentures can last for decades.
